An Introduction To Barry Steakfries

Ahh, Barry Steakfries. Who doesn't love the iconic law-breaking jetpack-wearing hero from Australia? Barry appears as the main protagonist of Jetpack Joyride, starting out as a down-on-his-luck gramophone salesman going door to door in a failed attempt to sell even one of ancient pieces of music-playing technology. Turning up to the secret laboratory of Legitimate Research, however, is when he goes from zero to hero, smashing through the wall and stealing the machine gun jetpack in hopes of turning his life around for the better, and to have one hell of a jetpack joyride. It's a classic story, and Barry himself is even more of a classic Halfbrick character, appearing canonically in several games, collectively known as the Barry Steakfries Series.

Barry's Bio

Name: Barry Steakfries

Age: >30

Likes: Jetpacks, action, theft, Flash, Craig, freedom, being the hero, steak and fries

Dislikes: Rules, being a gramophone salesman, Professor Brains

Since his very first appearance, Barry Steakfries has always been a thrill-seeking man of action and destruction, and that trait has only been expanded upon in every appearance after the next. Barry has been described by people at Halfbrick as a free-spirited optimist, living life the way he wants to and not letting the rules of society tell him what he can and can't do. He likes to grab life by the horns and fly free, seizing every adventure with a grin on his face and his jetpack as his wings he uses to soar.

Despite being a hero, Barry isnt perfect. Sometimes he can be inattentive and distractable, which can derail situations and make them more zany than they were before. He can be impatient, a little selfish and procrastinate on the important things he needs to do in favour of doing something more fun and interesting for himself. He tends to get argumentative and prideful, not being able to see past his own ego and starting conflicts with other characters over trivial things.

Some of you reading may not be aware, but Jetpack Joyride is actually part of a larger series of games featuring the guy, known as the Barry Steakfries Series among fans. His very first appearance in a game was in Age Of Zombies, a top-down shooter where Barry has to gun down time-travelling zombies sent out by his arch nemesis Professor Brains in order to save the world. In this game, Barry appears as a tongue-in-cheek parody of a gun-slinging action hero who swears, smokes cigars and says quotable cheesy one-liners. Alongside Barry is a character named Prince Runingunin, an immortal prince who acts as a sort of sidekick during cutscenes. It was initially released as a PlayStation Portable Mini, but was also ported to mobile systems, where it got majorly toned down. Barry's cigar was taken away, his sprites were remastered and all that foul language was scrubbed from his dialogue, although a few dirty jokes still remained (The cutscenes in the Western level come to mind...)

These games also have a sequencial canonical order. Jetpack Joyride is Barry's debut, being an origin story of sorts as to how he became such a badass hero. Jetpack Joyride 2 is a continuation of this story, Barry meeting several new characters as he smashes his way through the labs of Really Bad Corp and its league of villains. Monster Dash comes next as Barry emerges from the lab, getting his feet wet in blasting monsters in the face with his trusty shotgun with the wind blowing through his hair. Finally, he comes out as a slick badass action hero, ready to face the evil Professor Brains directly and take down his hoarde of brain-eating time-travelling zombies.
